Julius Kugy, a very good friend of the founder of Juliana – Alberto Bois de Chesne – was a mountaineer, writer and amateur botanist. The Trenta Valley and the Julian Alps attracted him predominantly by the mysterious Scabious of Trenta (Scabiosa trenta), described as a new species in the 18th century by the naturalist Balthasar Hacquet. Kugy, however, searched for it in vain, and in the end “the winner was the sober, cold mind of a scholar over the dreamy soul of a mountain poet.” What is the truth about the mysterious Scabious of Trenta? Can we really find it in Trenta?
